Digging in a corner of the garden, Biscuit found an old, yellowed piece of paper. He nudged it open with his nose: it was a map! It showed a stream, a big oak tree and a red X. Biscuit's tail spun like a propeller. “Treasure!” he barked. He straightened his red bandana; adventure was calling.

Preparation was important. Into his little green backpack Biscuit packed his favourite bone, a bottle of water, a torch and the map. At the door he paused and looked back at his home. “I'll be back for dinner,” he told himself. Then, tail held high, he scampered through the gap under the garden gate towards the forest.

The forest was even bigger than Biscuit had imagined. Birds sang and leaves whispered. From a branch, a red squirrel with a fluffy tail called down: “Hey, who are you? I've never seen a dog here before!” Her name was Cinnamon. When she saw the map, her eyes sparkled. “The big oak? I know the way. On one condition: I'm coming too!”

They came to a foamy, fast-flowing stream. Cinnamon leapt easily from tree to tree, but Biscuit stopped at the water's edge. The water looked cold and deep. “Look,” said Cinnamon, “step on those stones: one, two, three!” Biscuit gathered his courage and hopped from stone to stone. On the last one his paw slipped, but Cinnamon grabbed the strap of his backpack. They had made it!

Deep in the forest the trees grew closer together and the shadows grew longer. Strange sounds came: rustling, crackling… Biscuit's ears pricked up. He switched on his torch. Two shining eyes appeared among the bushes! His heart was thumping, and then out popped a hedgehog. “Excuse me,” said the hedgehog, “I've lost my way.” Biscuit laughed and showed his new friend the path.

At last, in the middle of a clearing, a giant oak tree rose up, its branches hugging the sky. The map was right! Biscuit ran to the roots and started to dig. Soil flew, Cinnamon cheered, even the hedgehog clapped. And then his paws struck something hard: a small wooden chest!

  7. Page 7 illustration: There was no gold inside the chest.
    Page 7

There was no gold inside the chest. Inside was an old photograph: a little child and, beside him, a dog that looked a lot like Biscuit. On the back it said: “The greatest treasure is the days we spend together.” Biscuit looked at it for a long time. Then he looked at Cinnamon, at the hedgehog and at the forest. Today had been a very precious day too.

    Page 8

As the sun set, Biscuit trotted in through the front door, just in time for dinner! His family hugged him and wiped his muddy paws. Biscuit put the photograph on the family's photo wall, right next to his own picture. Outside the window, Cinnamon waved from a branch. “Shall we draw a new map tomorrow?” she called. Biscuit's tail turned into a propeller once more.
