Page 1
Every morning begins the same way. Grandpa makes his tea, and Max settles at his feet on the porch. The garden is still misty, and neither of them is in a hurry. Some friendships don't need words.

Grandpa still remembers the day Max came home: a clumsy puppy with enormous paws, chasing everything that moved across the field. Grandpa's hair was dark then. Max's red collar was brand new.

These days their walks are slower. They follow the park path under the orange leaves, stopping whenever Max finds an interesting smell. Grandpa says slow walks show you more of the world.

When his granddaughter visits, she lies on the rug and reads picture books aloud. Max listens with his head on his paws, his tail thumping softly at the funny parts.

One summer evening they all go back to the beach where Max learned to swim. The water is calm and warm. Max wades into the waves as if he were young again, and everyone laughs.

At night Grandpa brushes Max's fur on his soft bed. There are more grey hairs on his muzzle than ever. "You're still the most handsome dog I know," Grandpa whispers.

On rainy afternoons Grandpa opens the old photo album. Max rests his grey chin on Grandpa's knee while the pages turn: birthdays, picnics, muddy paws on the kitchen floor.

As the sun sets, the three of them walk the country path together, their long shadows side by side. Many more slow walks are waiting, and every one of them is a treasure.
