Building a bedtime story routine
By KidleoBooks · Published 16 October 2026
A bedtime story can become a small, predictable ritual at the end of the day. These are practical ideas many families use — adapt them to your own evenings.
Keep it predictable
Reading at roughly the same point in the evening — after brushing teeth, for example — helps the story become part of the routine rather than a negotiation.
Choose calm stories at night
Exciting adventures are great during the day. At bedtime, slower stories with soft language and a gentle ending usually fit better.
Short is fine
You do not have to finish the book. Stopping at a cosy page and continuing tomorrow can give children something to look forward to.
Let the child take part
Ask them to find their name on the page, guess what happens next or remember the best moment of their own day — just like the hero of our bedtime story.
A note on expectations
A story is a lovely ritual, not a sleep treatment. If you have concerns about your child's sleep, talk to a healthcare professional.
