Bruno opened one eye, then the other. His bed was surrounded by balloons! His big bat ears shot straight up. Something special was happening today.

In the garden, the boy and his dad were hanging colourful bunting between the trees. Bruno ran back and forth, inspecting every flag very seriously.

"Hold still, birthday boy," said the boy, and put a small striped party hat on Bruno's head. Bruno stood very tall. He had never felt so important.

Ding-dong! At the garden gate stood his best friends: a beagle in a red bandana and a fluffy white poodle. Tails wagged so fast that the boy couldn't stop laughing.

Then came the cake: a small dog-friendly cake with a bone on top and a single candle. Everyone clapped and sang. Bruno's nose was the first to taste it.
Page 6
The boy blew giant soap bubbles, and the three dogs chased them across the grass. Pop, pop, pop! Bruno caught the most, or at least he thought he did.

Last came the present, wrapped in blue paper. Bruno tore it open with his paws and found a squeaky yellow duck. Squeak! It was love at first sight.

That evening Bruno fell asleep on his blanket among the confetti, the squeaky duck tucked under his chin. The boy stroked his ears and whispered, "Happy birthday, Bruno."
